Caravan Parks & Camping Sites
Very few of the people staying on camping & caravan sites in Warwickshire will give much thought to the origin of the term. The word caravan is originally Kurdish and in ancient times it was used to describe a group of people who were travelling by camel or horse on the silk road. The word is derived from Karwan: kar means mission or pursuit, and wan means those people and guardian. The first covered wagons that were designed to live in (rather than just as transport) were probably developed at the beginning of the 19th century in France. By the 1820's, English showmen were using them to travel between fairs and with circuses. Whilst in America, covered wagons were an intrinsic part of the settlement of the west in the middle of the 19th century. Caravanning, in its modern leisure activity sense, has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century – virtually as soon as the car had been developed, someone invented the towbar. The oldest caravanning club, The Camping & Caravanning Club, was formed in 1901 when six people went camping in an orchard on the outskirts of Wantage and The Caravan Club was formed 6 years later with 11 members. Today, they have over 1.2 million members between them, many of whom will be staying at Camping & Caravan Sites in Warwickshire
